Ponderings on Tech & Life…

Talking about Converged, Non-Converged, or In Between?

So, there is a poll out on PocketPCThoughts.com asking about converged devices that I thought I’d comment on.  For those of you who know me, I’ve been a PDA user before the term PDA really came into being. I was one of the first Palm users (pre-ordered my unit from USRobotics 8 months before they were released!) and had many Wizards, Psions, etc. before that.

I really push these things more than even some power users.  Anything I can do with these things, I do. PIM, video, music, project mangement – you name it, I do it on these things.

I always thought the concept of a converged device was neat, but didn’t think it would really work for me.  I used to say that I would melt a converged device with all that I have my units do at any one time and that still holds true sometimes.

So, what I am using now that would make me change my tune? I’m converged and non-converged. I’ll explain.

I used to use a non-connected device (I’ve only owned iPAQs) along with a cell phone.  Between battery life, storage capacity and capability, there was no device that met all of my needs.  Really, there still isn’t.  I find the PDA sized phone devices (converged) too big and fragile to carry with me everywhere.  And I was always worried about losing everything if the phone went dead on a smartphone.  So I carried an iPAQ for the PIM & application stuff and a cell phone with bluetooth for communications.  And I still do…

Today, I use a Cingular 2125, which is a Windows Mobile 5 Smartphone as my daily driver. Its my alarm clock, calendar, address book and task manager and for email.  It’s also my alarm clock, MP3 player and Audible player.  I found that I was using my iPAQ mostly for those things anyway. I still use my iPAQ on planes and when I’m out of the office.  I use it for video, different music and email where I need to reply heavily.

I’ll be getting more into this topic over the next several blogs, but I thought I’d use this topic to start off RichTech.  Hope you enjoy it.
